What is “Jay Street” (other than a street in Chapel Hill)?

For most people who live in Chapel Hill or Carrboro, Jay Street is just another street in town. But at Community Home Trust these days, saying “Jay Street” means so much more.

For us and our partners at Taft-Mills Group and the Town of Chapel Hill, “Jay Street” is a bold, exciting plan, one that will provide about 50 brand new, permanently affordable apartments for residents of Chapel Hill. So when you say “Jay Street” to us, we get pretty excited.

But the approval process for a project like this includes many steps and takes a while, so there is lots of time left for us to talk about the project and hear from community members who would like to share their suggestions and ideas — that’s YOU! What do YOU imagine when you think of these new apartment homes on Jay Street? What do you hope to see there? You can share your thoughts and ideas with us anytime right here.

As proposed, this new development will offer 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom units that are affordable to people earning anywhere at or below 30% of the Area Median Income (AMI) up to 80% AMI. What does that mean? Childcare workers, restaurant employees, retail workers, hospital employees, construction workers, and public servants like firefighters and police officers — and their families! — are just some of the neighbors we expect will take advantage of this new housing option.

We have proposed some cool amenities, too, things like a computer/business center, exercise facility, playground and tot lot, resident event center, centralized laundry (with each unit having a washer and dryer hookup), indoor and outdoor seating areas and covered patio, and an exterior storage area and balcony on each unit. The development is very near a bus stop, so residents will have easy access to public transportation, and it will provide direct access to the beautiful Tanyard Branch Trail as well.

So you can understand why we’re so excited!

Last week, we held a community meeting on Zoom — if you missed it, no problem! You can watch the recording and take a look at the slides here, and you can learn more about the project and sign up here to receive emails about future opportunities to join in the conversation. We also have an FAQ page that we regularly update with questions we have received about the project, but if you don’t find the answer to your question there, you can contact us and we’ll be sure to get back to you.

“Jay Street.” Are you as excited as we are?
