Dear Subscriber,
Here in Orange County, NC, early voting begins today. At CHT, we know that the run-up to this election season has been a noisy one, with a lot of information to process. It can be confusing at best.
Do local elections really matter, anyhow? And do our votes as individuals even count?
On Tuesday evening, we invited our CHT residents to join us for a conversation about local government with current Chapel Hill Town Council member, Michael Parker. He addressed some of these same questions with the residents who joined us. As he shared his experiences as an elected official, Michael talked about many of the things that our Council representatives are responsible for, things such as community safety, development and land use, and the wellbeing of their constituent communities. And as for whether one person’s vote counts? Michael reminded us that past local elections have been decided by as few as a handful of votes.
“Yes, every vote counts! So tell your friends and neighbors that voting really matters, especially this year. There is a real difference between many of the candidates in this year’s election in terms of how they feel about affordable housing.”
If you’re interested in learning more about local candidates’ perspectives on affordable housing, the Orange County Affordable Housing Coalition, of which CHT is a member, has complied a great resource in its candidate questionnaire, available on their website. The short questionnaire was sent in August to all candidates for Mayor and Town Council in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
If you’re looking for local resources about voting, from how to register to where and when you can vote, take a look at Orange County Government’s election information page.
And if you’re wondering why affordable housing is such a big issue in this year’s local elections, take a look at the most recent statistics on housing from the North Carolina Housing Coalition. Making sure all of our neighbors have a stable, affordable place to live has never been more important – and we have a lot of work to do.
With gratitude for your commitment to our communities,
Kimberly Sanchez, Executive Director
