About the Home Trust
The Community Home Trust (CHT)--previously known as Orange Community Housing
Land Trust (OCHLT)-- is a private, nonprofit developer and steward of affordable
housing in Orange County, NC. For almost 20 years, our organization and
its predecessors have worked to create and maintain permanently affordable
housing in Orange County.
The first Home Trust home was purchased in June 2000. Today there are more than 160
homes in the Home Trust, with another 50 scheduled for completion by July
2011. Home Trust homeowners are school teachers, town employees, university
and hospital workers, families with children, retirees, and single adults
who earn 80 percent or less of the area median income. If you'd like to know more about our homebuying process, click here for the Steps To Buy page.
Our properties include single-family homes, townhouses, and condominiums.
Typically, our homes sell for between $90,000 and $150,000, which is 30%
to 50% below appraised value. Most Home Trust homes are located in newer
neighborhoods in Chapel Hill and Carrboro such as Meadowmont, Larkspur,
Vineyard Square, and Pacifica. As a result, these neighborhoods are more
diverse than they would be without inclusionary housing.
The organization's operations are funded primarily by Orange County and
the Towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough. Developers participate
by building and conveying homes to us below market value. For information
on how to join The Home Trust, visit our section titled “Support
The Home Trust."

housing for residents and to determine if homeownership through a CLT is
right for you and your family.
